PHYSICAL EDUCATION (P.E)
PE VISION STATEMENT
Our Physical Education Curriculum aims to:
At St Joseph’s School, we recognise the importance of Physical Education for all pupils.
We promote and develop children’s physical and mental skills through regular Physical Education as well as Fit Friday’s, where we emphasise the importance of exercise and sustaining physical activity for periods of time. We give our pupils opportunities to experience a broad range of physical activities, games and sports to gain and build individual skills, team skills and sportsmanship.
We aim to design a Physical Education Curriculum with a good level of appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding, which is set out in the National Curriculum Physical Education Programmes of study.
How our Physical Education Curriculum is planned:
At St Joseph’s, we put into practice a Physical Education Curriculum that…
- allows pupils to develop fundamental movement skills and to become increasingly competent and confident and to access a broad range of opportunities to build on their agility. Pupils will continue to build on their fundamental movement skills as they progress on to KS2.
- gives EYFS and KS1 pupils the skills they need to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, applying these in a range of activities. KS2 pupils will develop these skills in isolation and combinations.
- teach pupils, and give them opportunities to participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending. This will prepare pupils in EYFS and KS1 for when they are playing competitive games in KS2 such as football, netball, basketball, tennis and hockey, applying previously learnt skills.
- enables EYFS and KS1 to perform dance routines using simple patterns, developing into a range of dance movements in KS2.
- allows KS2 pupils to develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance for the skills they would need for gymnastics and athletics.
- allows pupils to take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges, both in a team and individually.
- teaches pupils to compare and improve their performances through self-evaluation, in order for them to achieve their personal best.
- In addition, we give pupils the opportunity to swim in year 4. Pupils are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres; using a range of strokes effectively, such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke; perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
