ENGLISH VISION STATEMENT
English Vision Statement
English is at the heart of children’s learning, it is embedded throughout our curriculum at St. Josephs’ and is built around encouraging our children to be confident readers; who read for pleasure and analytically, to be creative writers and to have the skills and broad vocabulary to articulate ideas, arguments and the vital communication skills that students need to succeed in school and beyond.
We are privileged to welcome a diverse range of children from all over the world and we seek to plan reading and writing lessons that are rooted in experiences that are relatable to the children’s own lives. Reading and writing is taught through a comprehensive and diverse range of imagery – including the use of videos, graphic novels, picture books and novels. The use of correct punctuation and grammar is encouraged throughout all our teaching and teachers consistently model this in both spoken and written form.
Early reading and writing is taught using synthetic phonics and forms an integral part in the early development of reading and writing. From body percussion to early mark making, children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and explore the language around them from Nursery through to Year 6.
Vocabulary plays an integral part of children’s communication – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Vocabulary is explicitly taught and our children are constantly exposed to robust and rich language.
All of our children have access to an English curriculum that is inclusive to all children, inspiring them through an outstanding learning experience and differentiated lessons to meet all children’s needs and offer successful outcomes.
We endeavour to ensure that all our children leave St. Joseph’s with a good understanding of the English language; spoken and written, and are visionary, life-long learners who have the skills to navigate their way through life eloquently, whether that is socially, emotionally or for an academic purpose.
