Welcome to Year 6 - St Maximillian Kolbe (6 Kolbe)

6

Feast Day 14th August - 'The most deadly poison of our time is indifference'

Class Teacher: Mrs Murphy

Teaching Assistant:  Mrs Scott

Year 6 is an exciting year packed full of opportunities to develop in every aspect of school life, in readiness for the next big step. Everyone is expected to help create a positive working environment, to continually challenge themselves and to aim for the highest standards in everything they set out to achieve. We embrace all of this within the Christian ethos of our school family which is at the very heart of all we do.

In Year 6 our children act as role models by their exemplary behaviour, leadership and caring attitude towards the younger children in both KS1 and KS2. Everyone has a special buddy from our Foundation class with which they build a relationship throughout the year and ensure they feel welcomed. Our children are awarded special positions of responsibility in the first term including head girl, sports ambassador, house captains and librarian. These roles enable them to make a valued and active contribution to our St Joseph’s school family whilst developing key skills including leadership, organisation and teamwork .

Transition

The transition to secondary school plays a big part in this final year and we have a varied programme of visits and extra-curricular activities to ensure our children are fully prepared.

We place a key emphasis on preparation for SATs in May and work on past papers from the Autumn term. On a weekly basis the children benefit from extra adult support to provide challenge and focus for individual groups of children.

External Organisations, Groups & Individuals

We benefit greatly from the expertise gained from working in partnership with local organisations and individuals who support our children in every aspect of their development. Some of these include; COINS (Christian Outreach in Newbury), Newbury Building Society, Trinity School, St Bartholomew’s School, West Berkshire Council, Sports Groups, Newbury Library etc.

We rely on working in close partnership with parents to support our children in their learning. Please encourage them to:

  • read regularly (from a wide range of different genres)
  • learn their times tables
  • complete their homework to a high standard
  • improve their spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • write in joined up cursive script

Leading House Liturgy

We were so blessed that our Year 6 children were able to lead us in Liturgy last week. They explained how the story of the Leper helps us to understand why everyone deserves human dignity and also helped us think about our Catholic Social teaching theme for that week. Thank you House captains!”
