Mathematics Curriculum Aims

Mathematics ‘is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject’ (DfE, 2014).

At St Joseph’s, our aim is that our children are confident, skilled and resilient mathematicians that have a deep understanding that they are able to apply to different areas of Maths as well as real life contexts.  We want to nurture their curiosity and problem solving skills through the teaching of this subject. Our Mathematics Mastery curriculum focuses on fluency, reasoning skills and problem solving. It has been developed to ensure that every child can achieve excellence in mathematics. It follows a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. In our diverse school, we understand that mathematics is an international language. Through our curriculum, the children will develop strong reasoning skills and mathematical language.

How is our Mathematics Curriculum Planned:

Across the school, we use White Rose as the structure of when we teach Maths. (Please see our Unit Overview for this structure). Teachers will use White Rose as a basis for their Medium Term planning, but will also use a range of resources, including Master the curriculum, Maths No Problem, Nrich and the NCETM website. Teachers will ensure that they use a mastery approach in their planning that ensures all children are challenged and have opportunities to reason and problem solve.

Number fact and Times table planning

Effective understanding and recall of number facts and times tables is the foundation of most of the mathematics children will do at primary school and the mathematics curriculum involves children being fluent in number skills. Number facts are taught in Reception, Year 1 and 2, using the Number Sense structure. Times tables teaching will start in Year 3 and continue into Year 5 (where appropriate). Our times tables scheme focuses on the key times table facts that the children need and includes both the multiplication and the division facts. The children will complete a test each week and will use the marking process to practise rehearsing the times tables. We support children in their Times table practise through the use of Times table Rock stars.
