Our Art Curriculum Aims to:

At St Joseph’s our intention is for art to stimulate a child’s creativity and imagination by providing visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. We aim to enable children to develop their creativity and imagination through a variety of activities, use of different materials, tools and techniques.  We want to increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art in different times and cultures. To foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.

How is our Art Curriculum Planned:

At St Joseph’s, art is mostly taught through a topic approach alongside Design & Technology, History and Geography. Our curriculum is carefully planned to engage and excite all our learners. Our long-term and medium-term plans map out the themes covered each term for each key stage. These plans define what we will teach and ensure an appropriate balance and distribution of work across each term. We ensure a variety or artists and designers from different cultures across the world are looked at. We plan the activities in art so that they build upon the prior learning of the children. While we give children of all abilities opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding, we also build planned progression, so that there is an increasing challenge for the children as they move up through the school. Teachers encourage children to evaluate their own ideas and methods, and the work of others, and say what they think and feel about them. We give children the opportunity within lessons to work on their own and collaborate with others, on projects in two and three dimensions and on different scales.
