ST JOSEPH'S WORSHIP & PRAYER - SCHOOL CLOSURE

'Your word is a lamp for my feet; a light on my path' Psalm 119

We come together as a community of faith in so many different ways, through Mass, prayers and worships. Sadly, we cannot be together physically to share in these special occasions at the moment, but we all look forward to doing so again.

In the time that we are waiting through we still want to praise God, to thank God and to reach out to God. As a school we have created a few videos of worships and prayers and hope to add to this over the next few weeks.

If you have any ideas for worships or prayers which you think would help others then please let us know.

St Frances De Sales are also live streaming their Sunday morning mass at 10am This is a vital chance for all of us to come together spiritually. https://www.stfrancisdesales.org.uk

This Sunday morning (3.5.20) Mass will be streamed from St Joseph's Church, London Road and celebrated by father Pat. Please head over to http://www.stjosephsnewbury.org.uk for the link on Sunday morning. God Bless you all.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Sadly we couldn't be together to celebrate the stations of the cross this year but that doesn't mean we can't be together virtually to pray. Please come together as a family to remember what the Lord did for us. You could set up a little prayer table. Please send in pictures of your family marking Holy week to the office.

EASTER VIGIL

Easter vigil 11th April 2020

As we are not able to celebrate together it’s important for all of us to make Easter a very special time. Each day has a special message for us; Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Vigil and Easter Day. In this time of crisis we need to stay even closer to the Lord with hope and confidence in his love for us. He walks with us in the good and bad times waiting for us to see him.

Bringing the light of the risen Christ into our homes

At the Easter Vigil the new fire is lit and the new Easter candle lit from this fire.

We can do this in our homes.

Prepare well.  You need a big candle, perhaps use the one that the children painted on the Lent preparation day. Have other candles in the house ready.

Light a small fire in the garden

Turn all of the lights out as you go into the garden

Before the Easter candle is lit say this prayer

‘ On this most holy night, when our Lord Jesus Christ passed from death to life, the church invites her children throughout the world to come together in vigil and prayer. This is the Passover of the Lord:if we honour the memory of his death and resurrection by hearing his word and celebrating his mysteries, then we may be confident that we shall share his victory over death and live with him for ever.’

Light the candle and bring it into the house lighting all of the other candles to show that the light of Christ is spreading. Turn on all of the lights.

Prayer ‘Rejoice heavenly powers!   Sing choirs of angels!  Exult all creation around God’s throne!   Jesus Christ our King is risen!  Sound the trumpet of salvation!’

(For those with younger children, now is the time to make lots of joyful noise. If you have any percussion instruments, bells, saucepan lids, etc.)

After everyone has calmed down, sit and listen to this next part. Give a brief history of salvation.

  • In the beginning God created the world and everything in it. He created people. He said everything is very good.
  • People began to think that they were equal to God and turned away from him thinking that they knew best.
  • God promised to send them a Saviour who would make it possible for mankind to be reunited with God.
  • God did not leave us alone but sent many people to help us. We hear about them in the first readings at Mass.
  • Moses was very important. God called Moses to help to free his people from slavery in Egypt. There were some very dramatic events. Ask the children what they know.
  • The people had to be ready to go quickly. No time to bake properly so they made unleavened bread.
  • (Look at Exodus 14 and following for yourselves and pass on to the children)
  • The people passed through the sea and reached freedom.
  • They thanked God with all of their hearts. God had saved them. Every year since then the Jewish people celebrate Passover remembering how God saved them then and continues to save them now.
  • Jesus always celebrated Passover. It was after the Passover meal that he began his journey to the cross, dying to save us all from sin and rising again to bring us new life with God.
  • Ask the children how we celebrate Passover, not just at Easter but every week.
  • Read the Gospel (3 choices: Year A Matt 28 v 1 – 10 ; Year B Mark 16 1 – 8 ; Year C Luke 24 v 1 – 12)
  • HAVE A PARTY

PRAYER
